As a person with a family history of cardiovascular complications, you understand the importance of managing your own health. For many adults today, there is a focus toward preventing complications that can easily be exacerbated by poor diet, exercise and adverse lifestyles.

For individuals with a history of cigarette smoking or are suffering from diabetes mellitus, there is an increased risk for a cardiovascular complication known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD). With symptoms most commonly presented as leg muscle pain, especially during exercise, the elderly population is at greatest risk.

Because PVD often results in excruciating leg pain, especially during exercise, it is often misdiagnosed as a complication related to a back injury. However, using a medical questionnaire known as the Edinburgh Claudication questionnaire, many physicians can rule out other complications and narrow the focus to the cardiovascular system.

In addition to Edinburgh Claudication questionnaire, the healthcare professional should utilize a process known as ABI testing which includes blood pressure and Doppler to monitor the arterial pulses. When your ABI testing reveals an arterial pulse, in either lower extremity, of less than 0.9, peripheral vascular disease can be confirmed.

Following confirmation of PVD, your physician will want to manage the complications that may result in life threatening complications. For example, the presence of PVD may result in the development of stroke. To avoid stroke, your physician should consider anti-platelet therapy. The use of medications such as Plavix may also be indicated, although some patients choose to use aspirin as an alternative.

Smoking has been found to be the leading cause of the cardiovascular complication known as peripheral vascular disease (PVD). In fact, it is estimated that for every 10 cigarettes smoked per day, there almost a two fold increase in the risk for developing PVD into late adulthood. Therefore, if you have a family history of cardiovascular complications, consider a smoking cessation program as a way in which to reduce your risk for developing PVD later in life.

As with any complication associated with cardiovascular disease, it is important to obtain diagnosis early when symptoms begin. When leg pain develops, especially during periods of exercise, and your complication is not related to a back injury, ask your physician to conduct ABI testing and the Edinburgh Claudication questionnaire as a way in which to confirm, or rule out, the presence of peripheral vascular disease (PVD).

If you are having pain in your muscles, try putting 2 or 3 cups of epsom salts in a bath of hot water. Have the water as hot as you can stand. Soak in the bath for at least 15 minutes.

If you cannot get into the bath, or don’t have one, try soaking a towel in a basin of hot water and epsom salts [ 1 cup ] lay the towel on the sore muscles.

I always thought using epsom salts as a back pain remedy was an “old wives tale”, but I am a firm believer in it now.

If you suffer with sciatic back pain, you should try this. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn’t. Sciatica is very often related to tight muscles and the salts have helped in some cases.

Tight muscles very often cause back pain, and again the salts are worth trying.
